LEPH 2026: Enduring Violence, Crafting Justice – The Two-Decade Impact of Janine Ewen in Public Health, Safety, and Childhood Vulnerability

Abstract

This masterclass provides a longitudinal analysis of the transition from system-impacted survivor to system-shaping specialist. For over 20 years, Global Consultant Janine Ewen has translated a biography of early adversity—beginning in a women’s refuge at age nine—into a career tackling complex exploitation and criminalisation.

Having trained hundreds of officers and consulted for GLEPHA, UNODC, and Police Scotland, Janine shares the "behind-the-scenes" reality of integrating policing, vulnerability, and harm reduction. The session explores three pillars:

  • Harm Reduction

  • Trauma-Informed Care

  • Vulnerability:

From Northeast Scotland to Brazil’s urban favelas, Janine offers practical guidance for practitioners and students to utilise lived experience as a transformative tool for health equity and systemic reform.
