In the article "Are we offering sufficient lifelong health support for domestic abuse survivors?", Janine Ewen argues that domestic abuse must be recognised as a lifelong public health crisis rather than a time-limited social issue. Drawing on the poignant personal experience of her mother—whose decade of abuse led to chronic pain, disability, and a diminished quality of life prior to a terminal cancer diagnosis—Ewen illustrates how the physiological and neurobiological trauma of abuse "resurfaces" as long-term health complications. She critiques a system that prioritises short-term crisis management over the "lifelong care" required to manage the enduring physical and mental scars of trauma. Ultimately, the article calls for a systemic shift toward timely, accessible, and restorative health support to ensure that survivors are not left to navigate the "gruelling battle" of chronic illness and systemic failure alone.
